LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDIICNE
Many years ago, Norman Cousins was diagnosed as a terminally ill
patient. He was given six months to live. His chance for
recovery was not very promising.
He realized that the stress, sadness and anger in his life
had contributed to his disease. He wondered, “If illness can be
caused by being negative, can wellness be created by being
positive?”
He decided to conduct an experiment on himself. He knew
that laughter was a positive activity. So, he watched all the
funny movies he could find. He read funny stories, too. He asked
his friends to share funny jokes and funny stories with him.
Initially, he found relief for his pain after laughing for
10 minutes. Subsequently, he recovered from his illness and
lived happily, healthily and productively for another 20 years.
He attributed his recovery to laughter.
Laughter is essential to our well-being and liveliness. If
we are not well, laughter helps us get well: if we are well,
laughter helps us stay well.
Indulge in whatever that makes you laugh – movies, sitcoms,
music, books, cartoons, jokes, friends – especially when you are
depressed. Give yourself opportunities to laugh loudly at
anything funny. You definitely feel better afterwards.
Some disease may be contagious, but none is as contagious
as laughter.
