MAKING HEALTHY CHOICES
There is no secret
to healthy eating. Be sure to eat food of various kinds. Every
time you are confronted with food, you should learn to make wise
choices. This is important for your well-being, especially if
you are overweight. People who are obese should aim for an
overall healthy lifestyle which includes good nutrition as well
as regular exercise. Try some of these ideas for healthy
eating.
Eat
home-cooked food
This is a
great way to save money, eat healthy and spend time with your
family. . When preparing meals, choose low-fat or low-calorie
ingredients and learn to substitute. If you feel like having a
snack, choose snacks that are nutritious and filling. A piece of
fresh fruit, raw vegetables or yoghurt is excellent to keep you
full until your mealtime. Eat these snacks as a healthy
alternative to chips, cookies or candies.
If
you choose to eat out, remember these important suggestions:
Watch the
portion you eat. Portion sizes at certain restaurants and fast
food places are usually more than one serving, which can lead
you to overeat. Certain food and beverages are served in large
quantities that exceed standard serving sizes. French fries and
carbonated drinks are larger than they used to be in the 1970’s.
Choose smaller portions and go for green leafy salad with
low-fat dressing. Super-sized portions can lead to weight gain,
so we should eat sensible portions to maintain a right weight.
Eat
food that is high in fibre
Whole
gain cereals, legumes (lentils and beans), vegetables and fruit
are good sources of fibre that may make you feel full with lower
calories. A simple carbohydrate such as sugar is not good,
especially those found in cakes and pastries. So eat them
sparingly.
